Ladies and gentlemen, a pleasant day to all of you!
Today we are gathered to reflect on the profound impact of two of the remarkable works by our national hero, Jose Rizal—Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. These novels are not just merely stories; they are powerful instruments of change that ignited the flames of revolution and inspired generations of Filipinos to seek justice and freedom. Through its protagonist, Rizal exposes the corruption, injustice, and social inequalities faced by Filipinos under Spanish colonial rule. The novel's title, which translates to "Touch Me Not," symbolizes the deep wounds inflicted upon our nation by oppressive forces. It was a bold statement against the abuses of the clergy and colonial government, making it a catalyst for awakening national consciousness among Filipinos. In El Filibusterismo, Rizal takes this critique further. The sequel dives deeper into the themes of rebellion and revolution. Here, we see a more radical Rizal, one who acknowledges that peaceful reforms may not suffice in the face of relentless oppression. Through these, Rizal articulates the struggles of his countrymen, urging them to rise against tyranny.
Even today, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo remain essential reading for Filipino students. They serve as reminders of our history—the sacrifices made in pursuit of freedom. These works continue to resonate with contemporary issues such as corruption, inequality, and social injustice. They challenge us to reflect on our responsibilities as citizens and to uphold the values of democracy, unity, and patriotism.
We celebrate Rizal's brilliance today, but also his deep love for our country and his readiness to give his life in defense of our independence. His writings still serve as a guide, serving as a constant reminder of our duty to protect justice, emphasize education, and have a strong sense of patriotism. Let's pledge to uphold the principles that Rizal advocated as we consider his legacy. In our thoughts and deeds, let us make sure that our heroes' sacrifices are never forgotten and that their aspirations for our nation endure.
To Dr. José Rizal, we are grateful. For your bravery that inspired a nation, for your words that sparked a revolution, and for the unselfish life you gave to the Philippines. As your fellow Filipinos, may we never stop remembering you by creating a fair, forward-thinking, and cohesive country. Mabuhay ka, Dr. José Rizal! Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!
